McKinney Center gets ready for new fall classes

The McKinney Center - Jonesborough Community Arts Center

Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts at the McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington School will be accepting registrations for all ages now through August 13, for its fall visual & performing arts classes.

The classes will begin Saturday, August 20, and continue through November.

As part of the new semester, the center will hold a Fall Expo on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the center, located at 103 Franklin Avenue in Jonesborough.

This event is free and open to the public. Visitors will be able to tour the building and classrooms and get information on the fall classes. Class instructors will be conducting live demonstrations and will be on hand to answer your questions about specific classes.

The fall series will include nearly 40 classes and workshops as part of the growing arts program in Jonesborough.

“We have something for everyone,” said Director Theresa Hammons. “Our classes range from visual arts, to dance, to drama. We have classes in ceramics, watercolors, drawing, mosaics, print making, beading, drama, tap dance, and hip hop.”

This semester the class series also will include the ever popular Bucket Drums class, a vocal performance course entitled, The Radiant Musical Performer, and new courses including Charcoal Portraits, Fun with Smalti Mosaics and Beginning Bead Embroidery.

There are three classes specifically geared toward elementary and middle school students. The curriculum for Art Adventures, grades K-2 and Creative Construction, grades 3 – 6, will center around students making “selfies!”  Taking selfies for social media are all the rage but artists have been making self-portraits since the beginning of time.

Students will explore the self-portrait and self-expression with various forms of media including paint and clay.

Homeschool Art-Time, is for students grades K-5 and is specifically geared toward families and homeschool co-ops.

Several classes which have become core curriculum components will also return, such as The Potter’s Wheel Series, which offers a world of opportunity in ceramic construction.  Adventures in Drawing, Studio Art, Earthen Art: Hand-building with Clay and Watercolors.

There is also an After School Drama Class for grades K-5 at Jonesborough Elementary School which is open to students from other schools, and additional drama classes for all grade levels entitled, All the World’s a Stage.

There are also Tap and Hip Hop classes for most ages.

The fall semester is packed full of one-day workshops including Glass Fusion Fun, Skyscape Oil Painting, Watercolor Painting Parties, Rhythm and Movement, Writers Group, Basic Digital Photography, Mosaics and DIY Wedding workshops.

Early registration secures a spot in classes as well as a $10 discount through August 13.  Individual class costs vary.
