Lady Pioneers advance in district tournament
By Christopher ShieldsWith the pressure turned up at Daniel Boone High School on May 2 for the first round of the 1-AAA district tournament, the Lady Pioneers of David Crockett staved off elimination by outlasting Dobyns-Bennett 3-2 after nine innings of play.
The biggest hit of the contest came at the end when Crockett’s Peyton McKee looped a walk-off double in the ninth inning to drive home Jessica Leach to propel the Lady Pioneers to the second round of the tournament.
The Lady Indians struck first in the opening inning of the contest with one run off of Haley Grindstaff.
The Pioneers would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, but another run an inning later would put D-B back ahead.
Scoreless fifth and sixth innings would push Crockett to the brink of elimination, down 2-1 entering the seventh inning.
But the Lady Pioneers would drive home the tying run as Kelsey Ford scored off of a Callie Lowe RBI.
After a scoreless eighth, the Lady Pioneers would capture the contest in the ninth with Mckee’s walk-off double.
Despite only scoring five runs between them, the Lady Pioneers collected 11 hits in the contest and the Lady Indians added 10.
With the win, the fourth seeded Lady Pioneers advance to the double-elimination round of the tournament, where they will face top conference team Volunteer on May 5.
Depending on the outcome, they will either face the winner or loser of Daniel Boone and Science Hill.
