Crockett’s Wright named one of two Witten scholars
By Chris Shields
Wright was presented with the award along with a $5,000 scholarship by the former Elizabethton and current Dallas Cowboys standout.
At Crockett, Wright was a Tennessee Scholar and a three sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball.
He graduated in the top 10 percent of his class in May with a 3.9 GPA. He excelled on the gridiron as a receiver, finishing fifth in the nation in yards after catch.
The award was presented by Witten through his SCORE Foundation at his annual football camp in Elizabethton.
Witten who grew up in the area and played for Elizabethton High School, set records at the University of Tennessee before being drafted in the third round by the Dallas Cowboys in 2003. He is currently third on the all-time NFL list of receptions at the tight end position.
Aside from offering one of the largest free football camps in the country as well as two scholar athlete scholarships, Witten’s SCORE Foundation has been an active charity locally and in Dallas.
The foundation promotes causes such as positive influence programs for at-risk youth, and domestic violence awareness, and works with the Niswonger Children’s Hospital in Johnson City.
A male and female student are selected each year from the area to receive the scholarship.
This year, Holston’s Megan Honaker joined Wright as an honoree.
Wright plans to attend East Tennessee State University this fall where he wants to pursue a degree in sports medicine.
