“As you know, Public Safety is over the constables, and this has run its due course,” he said.
Burleson was found guilty of theft over $500 by Criminal Court Judge Stacy Street during a trial last month on charges related to a stolen trail bike.
Though the sentencing hearing for the Class E felony was scheduled for Feb. 14, Commissioner Mike Ford said Burleson chose to resign in the interim.
In addition to accepting the resignation, Nave asked Public Safety Committee members to consider submitting the letter to Administrator of Elections Maybell Stewart and Election Commissioner Jon Ruetz so the opening could be filled during the 2014 elections.
Stewart said the qualifying deadline for those interested in running for District 1 constable is Wednesday, March 12, and the office will be on the May 6 and Aug. 7 ballots.
Ford made a motion to accept Burleson’s resignation and give the letter to Stewart so she can begin election procedures.
Commissioner Pete Speropulos seconded the motion, which passed with unanimous approval.
