Tennessee Valley Church Furniture to closeA family-owned Washington County business will be closing its doors for good at the end of the year.
Tennessee Valley Church Furniture, 2779 Highway 11E, Telford, will close on Dec. 31, ending a legacy of serving churches throughout the eastern United States for nearly 30 years.
Owner Tammy Milhorn says having to close the long-standing business is “very sad” for her and the rest of her family.
“I’ve been down there trying to get everything cleaned out,” she said. “It’s pretty depressing.”
The company was started by Milhorn’s father, Billy Joe Humphrey, in 1985. In its heyday, the business employed between 15-18 people. Humphrey passed away in 1998, at which time Milhorn took over, running the company to present day.
“We did mostly refinishing and reupholstering for churches,” Milhorn said. “We worked with churches from Chicago to Miami, redoing antique church pews and manufacturing additional ones to match their existing ones if they were adding on.”
But business has slowed, forcing the closure, Milhorn said.
“We’ve only had about two people working here for the past year,” she said. “We’ve been trying to wait and see if the economy would pick up. It hasn’t.”
