Light named new county commissioner
By Karen Sells
Light fills the vacancy left by Commissioner Evert Jarrett, who died April 19.
Commissioner Ben Bowman, in his nomination of Light, said he had received many calls regarding the opening, and is proud of how the residents in the 8th District have stepped up to the plate.
Bowman’s nomination was seconded by Commissioner Mark Ferguson.
No other nominations were received from the commission or the public prior to or during the meeting.
Light was sworn into office by County Clerk Kathy Storey and served as a voting member during the May 29 meeting.
A lifelong resident of Washington County, Light taught vocational agriculture at Daniel Boone High School for several years.
He currently works for Cambron Insurance Agency in Johnson City.
“I knew Evert pretty well, and I thought he did a fantastic job,” Light said. “He seemed to help a lot of people.”
Light has the same goal in serving as a county commissioner. “I look forward to working with the commission, and I hope I can do a good job,” he said.
Light will serve as commissioner until the next countywide election in August. The winner of this election will complete the remainder of the four-year term set to end in 2014.
The 8th Commission District consists of voting precincts 3 Westview, 7 Fall Branch, 13 Harmony, 17 Bowmantown and 18 Limestone.
