Shop with a Cop program seeking donations

The Jonesborough Department of Public Safety is gearing up for its second annual “Shop with a Cop” program, where officers within the department take underprivileged children Christmas shopping.

The purpose of the event is to provide a happier holiday season for needy children and to have those children interact with law enforcement officers in a positive setting, officials said.

On Dec. 20, uniformed officers and firefighters volunteer their time to take the children to a pizza party and then shopping at Wal-Mart. Each child is given $100 to spend on themselves and their families.

Last year, the program was a great success, but Jonesborough police are hoping to make this year’s Shop with a Cop event even better.

Officials are now seeking donations, with a goal of raising $5,000. That money would accommodate approximately 30 children, officials said.
