Gracious Designs to host cash mob Aug. 11 at 11 a.m.When you enter Gracious Designs of Jonesborough, the southern hospitality and charm immediately embrace each guest just the way store owner Marty Glasgow intended.
Approaching nine years in downtown Jonesborough, Gracious Designs came from Glasgow’s passion for assisting her friends in expressing their individual decorating styles.
After retiring from the corporate world, Glasgow found a new calling in life and researched the possibility of turning her talents in decorating and lifestyle tips into a new career.
“Initially, my mother was not in favor of me starting my own business,” Glasgow said. “She prayed about it a lot, and one day she called and told me to go for it — and to get some lamps to sell.”
Being a Jonesborough resident, Glasgow found her space in the heart of downtown and immediately knew it was the right place to be.
“We started on a wing and a prayer with a goal of having a variety of different styles including traditional, country and contemporary,” she said. “I also focus on education — to help folks understand their own style with reasonable prices and exclusive items found only in Gracious Designs.”
Reflecting on her childhood, Glasgow aims to create an atmosphere that is fun and refreshing, similar to that of a large department store in the city. She sometimes wears her favorite dress and a fancy hat as employees wrap purchases for free and welcome each guest with a warm smile.
With prices for every budget, the store specializes in creating home environments that are unique, comforting, aesthetically pleasing and most importantly, a reflection of those who dwell within them.
The store’s displays change twice a month. Inventory is constantly updated to keep shoppers coming in frequently from around the region and several hours away in search of Gracious Designs’ signature lamps and other unique items.
With a variety of merchandise including kitchen accessories/gourmet items, baby gifts, home accessories, tables, linens, books and serving as the only Illuminare candle dealer in the area, Gracious Designs also offers in-store assistance and customized home designs.
“The first person you should make your home for is yourself. You should also feel embraced and we are here to help with that,” Glasgow said. “Everything you give out grows, while everything you hold in withers and dies.”
Gracious Designs also offers free classes for every level of decorator, as well as lifestyle concepts and tips every Saturday featuring Glasgow and her team of professional designers.
Class topics include having “walls that wow,” creating a “guest-ready” home and kick-offs of each new season.
