We Dig Jonesborough set to begin
By Kristen Swing
‘We Dig Jonesborough,’ as the campaign is being called, will include several special events and extended shopping hours among stores located in the historic district. It aims to bring visitors to the downtown area to become part of the experience of revamping the streetscape on Main Street.
“This is to get everyone excited about what is going on in downtown Jonesborough,” said Melinda Copp, project coordinator for the town. “When it all comes together, it’s going to be fabulous.”
On Saturday, Aug. 4, as part of the promotion, the town’s first-ever cash mob will take place at 11 a.m. It will be the first of nine cash mobs to take place throughout August and September.
“Cash mobs are a great way to support local businesses,” Copp said.
A cash mob asks participants to spend $20 at the designated store during the Saturday morning event.
For every $20 spent at the store, a shopper will be entered to win a $50 door prize from that business. And for every week someone participates in a cash mob, that individual will be entered to win a grand prize that features Jonesborough-based products, gift certificates and entertainment tickets valued at $1,000.
“We will cash mob a different store each week,” Copp said. “Cash mobs started out as ways of saving struggling businesses. But this is as much about community spirit as it is about supporting local businesses. This is a social event.”
Leaders will announce the name of the store chosen for a cash mob each week in the Herald & Tribune. The stores will be chosen at random through a lottery system.
Throughout the next wo months, in addition to the cash mobs, merchants in downtown will remain open every Friday until 8 p.m. The extended hours will work nicely with the free Music On The Square concerts held every Friday in front of the downtown courthouse, Copp said.
The Chester Inn Museum, which chronicles the history of Jonesborough from its inception in 1779 to the present, will also extend its hours on Fridays until 8:30 p.m. There is no charge to tour the museum.
