Visitors Center to host shape note singing schoolA free Shape Note Singing School will be held at the Visitors Center on Saturday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Shape note singing began in New England around the turn of the 19th century as an aid to help people without formal musical training learn to sing.
The school will be led by the Old Field Singers, a group of shape note singers who meet monthly on the third Sunday at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area in Elizabethton.
All are welcome to participate regardless of age, experience, or religious affiliation. There is no charge for the school, but registration is requested.
The group sings from “The Christian Harmony” which was first published in 1867. It is four part harmony a capella.
